DevLog #2 - New MTG Rules

New experiences

Welcome to our third DevLog for MTG Doctor Phoenix, the next generation of MTG Doctor. If you’ve been a member of the MTG Doctor community all these years, thank you for your support and if you are not familiar with MTG Doctor thanks for taking the time to read our log.

In this DevLog we’ll be taking a look at the next version of the MTG Rules a feature currently available in MTG Doctor as a beta feature and one that has been completely rebuilt to provide an improved experience for everyone.

Symbols & References

The first item we set out to improve in this version is the way some of the important information is presented. We wanted the symbols to better match what we see in the cards while also making the glossary terms and references to other rules stand out.

The result is a newer view of the rules in which it’s easier to spot when symbols are getting called out as well as references to other rules and glossary terms. Items that we can also interact with.

Exploring Rules and Glossary Terms

New to this version is the ability to get more information from the references in a given rule. Tapping on a glossary terms allows the viewing of the term definition without leaving the rule. This means you can get any clarifications on the term without loosing your reading position in the rule you are currently viewing.

Glossary term expansion and rule reference exploration.

In a similar way, tapping on a rule referenced by the current rule will take you to that rule for further reading.

Rules Query

Also new in this version is the ability to query the entire ruleset for a given term or rule.

Query results for “First Strike”

This feature will query both the rules as well as the glossary returning a comprehensive list of all items related to the query term.

Content Update - Integration

Last but not least, this new version is fully integrated with our Content Update feature which means any changes to the rules will be available without having to wait for any approval of the app stores. (If you missed that update and would like to know more about it you may find that information here)

Closing Thoughts

In the coming month we’ll continue updating the MTG Doctor experience with the lessons we have learned over the past 12+ years since we first launched, and continue sharing these with our community in these DevLogs.

Thank you for reading this far and for using MTG Doctor all these years. Whether it has been one year or the entire 12+ years MTG Doctor would not have grown into such a great tool as it has without all your support. Join us during future DevLogs as we continue to share the next generation of MTG Doctor built on over 12 years of experiences and lessons.

We also have a giveaway as thanks to our MTG Doctor community coming this Friday, so don’t miss when we announce them by subscribing to our mailing list here
